Management or leadership

I have read most books by David Maister and there is one underlying theme in his thinking. Business is not about finding out what to do, books have been written about the right strategies for companies. David’s point is that success in business comes with finding the courage to actually do it. Managers are needed that have courage and display the following characteristics:

  • Energy
  • Drive
  • Enthusiasm
  • Excitement
  • Passion
  • Ambition

Recently I have read Joseph Jaffe‘s book. His point is contradictory: we live in a world that is deprived of different opinions and ideas. You can’t take incremental steps and expect exceptional results. We need leaders not managers.

Maybe Joseph is right for the small group of leaders in an industry (Apple comes to mind), for the rest of us we need to display the courage in taking small steps?
