Issue Management (2)

I talked two weeks back on issue management and mentioned three things essential for good issue management:

  • issue management tool
  • collaboration amongst the participants
  • process owner

I recognize now that a fourth one needs to be added and that is speed of circulation. The best way to enhance the amount of issues solved per hour invested is to increase the amount of information added to issues. Different people need to add to each issue what they know about it. In the end when somebody sits down and changes the code the developer has as much information about context, where and what to solve.

To enable so a shared issue ownership is necessary. Look through the list of open issues every day about 15 to 30 minutes and it will save the team hours. This is not just for the process owners (like project or team leaders) but even more so for developers. They usually hold most information on the issues in their heads.
